Art Deco Screen, 1930
Wrought iron and brass with silver and gold plating
Loaned from the Rose Family Collection
Since the early years of this century the Rose Iron Works, a Cleveland supplier of architectural ornament, has produced distinguished decorative metalwork. The companyís founder, Martin Rose, was born in Austro-Hungary and studied ornamental metalsmithing in Vienna prior to immigrating to Cleveland in 1902. On a return visit to Hungary in the 1920s, he persuaded a young designer, Paul Feher, to come to Cleveland and work for the firm. In the early 1930s Rose and Feher produced what was perhaps the most technically and stylistically sophisticated metalwork of the Art Deco style in America. After receiving a special commendation award in the 1930 May Show, this magnificant screen of iron and brass with silver and gold platingwas displayed for many years in Severance Hall. It has subsequently appeared in national and international exhibitions.
