Head of Nectanebo I
Late Period, Dynasty 30, reign of Nectanebo I, 380-362 bc
Red granite
Musée du Louvre E 27124
cat. no. 26

The back pillar of this statue identifies the ruler as Nectanebo I, the first king of Dynasty 30. The artists of this period looked back to Dynasty 26 and earlier periods for inspiration. The facial features of this head, particularly the eyes and mouth, recall the Head of a Saite Ruler, probably Apries (no. 23), while the ruler's names on the back are arranged in an order that was common in the Old Kingdom but rarely appears afterward.
