Musical Arts
Welcome to the Department of Musical ArtsSince 1918, the Department of Musical Arts has presented some of the world's finest soloists and ensembles in concert. Among the luminaries have been violinist Jascha Heifitz and Sir Yehudi Menuhin, pianists Shura Cherkassky and Peter Serkin, the Emerson, Juilliard, and Alban Berg String Quartets, organists André Marchal and Louis Vierne, soprano Arleen Auger, and composers Maurice Ravel, Nadia Boulanger, and Olivier Messiaen, to name but a few.
This strong tradition of excellence continues to this day with the presentation of over 70 concerts year-round. Featuring a diverse range of repertoire, from the masses of Josquin Des Prez to the organ works of J. S. Bach, and the latest avant-garde performance art of Meredith Monk, we seek to present the finest music created. Concerts take place in Gartner Auditorium as well as in other Museum settings like the intimate Recital Hall, the Inner Garden Court, and select galleries.
