Masters of early music who are unafraid of the new, Norwegian lute player Rolf Lislevand and Swiss flutist Matthias Ziegler explore remarkable interpretations of the Tratado de Glosas by 16th-century Spanish composer Diego Ortiz. From this frame of reference, the duo embark on improvisations to discover an entirely fresh direction in contemporary music—notably through the evocative sounds of Ziegler’s pioneering work with the bass and contrabass flutes. They are joined by harpist and singer Arianna Savall. Born into a family of Catalan musicians, Savall has since 1997 been a member of Hespèrion XXI, the early music ensemble founded by her parents, soprano Montserrat Figueras and gambist Jordi Savall. In addition to appearing with several early music ensembles, Savall performs and records her own contemporary songs set to Catalan poems. $29, CMA members $27.
