Gaudí designed the curving forms of this sofa from Casa Batlló to adhere to the ergonomics of the human body. Stripping his furniture of unnecessary ornamentation, he concentrated on radically simplified forms inspired by nature. Rather than applied decoration, the wood-grain patterns enliven the surfaces.

Gaudí's biomorphic shapes appealed to the Surrealists Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró.
