VIVA! Festival of Performing Arts - Bonga Sings Semba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo Ladysmith Black MambazoFriday, March 5, 7:30 p.m. Gartner Auditorium Ladysmith Blacksmith Mambazo has recorded over forty albums, selling over six million records at home and abroad. Their work with Paul Simon on the Graceland album attracted a world of fans. Since their first Grammy Award, they have been nominated for a Grammy six additional times, including a nomination in 2001 for the album Live From Royal Albert Hall. The highly engaging and energetic South African ensemble is a 10-member a cappella group, who sings in English, French, Zulu and various African dialects while adding touches of doowop, gospel, and reggae to its music. Bonga Sings Semba: The Music of Angola Friday, April 2, 7:30 p.m. Gartner Auditorium The French Le Parisien calls Bonga, "The precursor to Cesaria Evora," the Cape Verdean diva that made mora famous worldwide. Bonga's main musical style, the engaging semba has close affinities to mora and is a cross between Portuguese and Brazilian and rich African rythms. A superstar in Africa and Europe, Bonga is a major figure in Angolan music known for his distinctive husky vocals.
