Bishop Saint With Donor: About the Painting The Cleveland Museum of Art acquired Bishop Saint with Donor in 1927 as a gift from one of the museum's support groups, the Friends of the Cleveland Museum of Art.This panel is probably the central panel of a larger altarpiece. It depicts a Roman Catholic bishop on his throne, with his crozier in one hand and giving a benediction with the other. At the bottom of the throne is the figure of kneeling monk, possibly the donor who commissioned the altarpiece. The stylistic features of the painting indicate a medieval origin. Curators believe the panel was painted around 1420, but the artist is unknown. The panel was originally identified as French, but it is now thought to be Spanish in origin, and probably from the Catalonia region in Spain. At the time the painting was completed, it was common for artists not to sign their works. Thus, since there is no signature, the artist of the panel remains anonymous. Some suggestions have been made, such as the Catalan artist Ramon de Mur, but this is still uncertain.
