Neighborhoods
Looking again at these pictures from 1990, I am struck by how quiet they are. And thinking back to the experience of making them, it was all about quiet. Mark Schwartz's invitation to do the project was calm and casual. Then Dave Bergholz and Dan Berry gave me a relaxing introductory tour
and humbly pointed out some of the good works of the Foundation as they outlined my working parameters, which were simply the physical boundaries of Cleveland. And as I worked, the city was quiet, as though whispering secrets, with none of the noise or frantic activity I had expected. No one pestered me with the usual questions
about what I was doing, and never once did I feel threatened; not even in that low-lying "watch your back" area, where all that stirred was a small black dog who didn't actually stir. Thinking back, I don't recall people at all, except the assistant I was given who was so unobtrusive I can't recall his name. Mostly it was
all just about the quiet.
About Michael Book Born 1951, Colorado Springs
Lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Landscape has long been Michael Book's favorite subject matter. He humorously explains, "For me it's the only thing I photograph, so it's not necessarily easier, it's what I'm drawn to. It's a much more cooperative venue because it doesn't move. You don't have to make arrangements, it's always there, always available."
