Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901)

Each impression of Miss Löe Fuller is unique. This is unusual for works by Lautrec, whose editions were printed without variation. The artist experimented, printing each of the approximately sixty impressions differently. Five lithographic stones were used but were inked in an assortment of colors. Finally, some impressions, like this one, were dusted with gold or silver powder.

Born Mary Louise Fuller in Chicago, by 1878 Löie Fuller was working in the theater in New York. By 1891 she was pursuing a career as a dancer, performing works of her own invention. Flowing, billowy costumes and brilliant lighting created new and sensational theatrical effects and by 1892 she was performing in Paris.
