Julie Mehretu

Julie Mehretu tackles the infrastructure of the constructed world, imploding and exploding fragments of the real and imagined into a frenzied maelstrom of information. Accreted layers of Mylar, vellum, paper, ink and paint, Mehretu's canvases are as much drawn as painted. Perspectival renderings of architecture are woven with notational calligraphy, amorphous membranes, and organic motifs, enfolding multiple realities and spatial schemes into a single plane.

Mehretu refers to these vortexes of energy as "psychogeographic paintings" and feels her painting addresses multicultural or global concerns, including the question of identity. Mehretu is widely traveled and represents a broad fusion of ethnic identities. She "like[s] the idea that everything fits into a structure with a map or an architectural plan, but part of it is also about mapping who I am." Mehretu's paintings do not map a specific time or place, but represent apocalyptic hybrids of multiple cities, spaces and identities.

Julie Mehretu was born in 1970 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and lives and works in New York City. In 2002 Mehretu was an artist-in-residence at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN. Her 2003 solo exhibitions include the Walker Art Center and Matrix at the University of California Berkeley Art Museum.

Other recent solo exhibitions include White Cube, London (2002); The Project, New York (2001); ArtPace, San Antonio, TX (2001). Notable group exhibitions include Splat Boom Pow! The Influence of Comics in Contemporary Art, 1970-2000 at Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX; Drawing Now: Eight Propositions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Out of Site at the New Museum, New York; Painting at the Edge of the World at the Walker Art Center; Freestyle at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. Mehretu holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA from Kalamazoo College.
