Female Half-Figure Mold (about 350-300 BC)

The large demand for small-scale votive terracottas for the veneration of deities and local cult practices was achieved through a type of mass production in which artisans utilized molds such as this one, instead of crafting each figurine by hand--a rather time consuming undertaking. This mold produced a half-length female figure offering a basket, brimming with fruit in one hand, and a cup from which wine was drunk, known as a skyphos, in the other. Her wavy hair is parted in the center and she wears a crown. The fruitful and abundant offerings suggest she may have been dedicated to the goddess of agriculture, Demeter.
