International Symposium

Saturday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Scholars will lecture on aspects of the art and culture of the Western Greek colonies, placing their contributions in historical context. Most have been involved in organizing the exhibition Magna Graecia: Greek Art from South Italy and Sicily or have contributed to its catalogue:

Michael Bennett, curator of Greek and Roman art, Cleveland Museum of Art, and co-organizer of the exhibition, Magna Graecia

Aaron Paul, Richard E. Perry Curator of Greek and Roman Art, Tampa Museum of Art, and co-organizer of the exhibition, Magna Graecia

R. Ross Holloway, professor of central Mediterranean archaeology, Brown University

Mario Iozzo, director of the Center for Conservation in Florence and director of the Archaeological Museum of Chiusi, Italy, and collaborator on the exhibition, Magna Graecia

H. Alan Shapiro, W. H. Collins Vickers Professor of Archaeology and chair, Greek and Roman art, The Johns Hopkins University

Symposium tickets are $35 ($25 members; free for faculty and students with ID).

Greek Celebration Day

Sunday, Nov. 10, 1–4:30 p.m. Drop-in workshops, music, dance, gallery tours, and a fashion show of traditional Greek costume. Sponsored by The Hellenic Preservation Society of Northeastern Ohio.

Free Guest Lecture

Sunday, Oct. 27, 4 p.m. Rosalba Panvini, director of the department of archaeology, Region of Sicily, will speak on “The Recently Discovered Terracotta Altars from Gela.”

Staff Lecture Series

Three Fridays, Nov. 1, 8 and 15, 6:30 p.m. Barbara Kathman, assistant director, docent program, speaks on “Magna Graecia: Art, Life, and Culture.” Series tickets $60 ($40 CMA members).

Family Express

Sundays, Oct. 27–Dec. 15, 2–4:30 p.m., Family Express drop-in workshops are scheduled. Gallery talks in the museum’s collection of Greek art are also being planned. Group visitors may schedule slide lectures for their groups. Teacher Resource Center programs are being planned.
