Reclining Youth (about 525-500 BC)

Produced from a single mold, this sculpture was originally painted. It portrays a young man reclining on a couch holding a shallow bowl used for making libations (phiale) and a lyre. The figure may represent a deity or the deceased, elevated to the status of a hero. Dionysos, the god of wine, Apollo, the god of reason, and Orpheus, the legendary musician and philosopher, have also been suggested as subjects-based upon the reclining pose and the presence of the phiale and lyre.
