Enthroned Goddess with Panther (about 550-500 BC)
|
|
Enthroned Goddess with Panther (about 550-500 BC) This seated terracotta figure of a goddess still preserves the red color of the clothing. She wears a chiton, a long garment worn by both women and men. Over this article of clothing she wears a himation, or long outer garment, also worn by both sexes. On her head is a polos, or cylindrical headress. A small panther crouches obediently on her lap. This statuette is an import from Eastern Greece (Ionia), where such divine female figures, accompanied by panthers and lions, symbolized the goddesses' power over the natural world.Page 3 of 7 | On the next page: Head of a Boy (about 530 BC) |
