Head of a Woman (about 470-460 BC)

|
Head of a Woman (about 470-460 BC) This head comes from the area of temple E at Selinus and possibly formed part of the decoration of a metope, a section of relief sculpture that adorned a Greek temple. Sources for marble are non-existent in South Italy and Sicily, so marble heads, such as this one, would have been inserted into the less expensive and readily available sandstone, of which most temples were constructed.Page 5 of 7 | On the next page: Red-Figure Bell-Krater (about 470-450 BC) |
