Speakers Bureau Presents Unfolding Beauty If you are in the greater Cleveland area, acquaint your organization with one of this region's finest cultural institutions through a lecture from our Speakers Bureau. We have a spirited group of volunteers who will arrive at your location equipped with all the supplies necessary to present a 30-to 45-minute slide lecture, at no charge! Let us introduce your group to this world-renowned museum with an enlightening look at our diverse visual and performing arts programming. Unfolding Beauty: Japanese Screens from the Cleveland Museum of Art Special exhibition: July 15-September 16, 2001 The CMA's holdings of Japanese folding screens (byöbu) are among the finest outside Japan. Dating from the 16th through 19th centuries, the screens or pairs of screens chosen for this exhibition include Japanese-style colorful compositions as well as examples of more subdued ink paintings that focus on Chinese subjects such as flowers, birds, and life at court. Hanging scrolls and handscrolls created by some of the same painters, as well as works in lacquer and ceramic, will complement the screens. Most of the paintings are quite large (a pair of screens may be 25 feet wide), and all are susceptible to damage from exposure to light, so the exhibition will be shown in two groups, or "rotations," of 12-15 works each, Part I: July 15 - AUg. 12 and Part II Aug. 14 - Sept. 16.
