Trace the history of the woodcut, the oldest printmaking medium in the West, from its beginnings in the early 15th century to today in works from the museum collection. From Albrecht Dürer’s masterworks 500 years ago, to the 19th-century innovations of Gauguin and Munch, to works of the 20th century from Nolde and Matisse to Jim Dine and Terry Winters, artists have continued to exploit the expressive potential of this medium. The exhibition also explores the related media of wood engraving and linocut, the latter revolutionized by Picasso.
