Caucasus Egg
Cat. no. 68
Workmaster: Mikhail Perkhin (1860-1903)
Miniatures by Constantin Iacovlevich Krijitski (born 1858)
St. Petersburg, 1891 (the miniatures) and 1893
Gold, silver, enamel, diamonds, platinum, ivory, pearls, rock crystal
New Orleans Museum of Art: Matilda Geddings Gray Foundation Loan

The design of the egg, which was Alexander III's gift to his wife, Maria Feodorovna, alludes to the failing health of their son Georgi Aleksandrovich (1871-1899), whose portrait is seen on the top. He had been sent to the Caucasus in hopes of recovery, and the views are of the imperial hunting lodge, Abastuman. The stand is not original.
