Saint Peter Repentant, Georges de La Tour (French, 1593 - 1652) 1645
1951.454
Gallery 20 | European Art: Naturalism and Idealism, 1525–1725

On the night of the Last Supper, the apostle Peter denied knowing Christ. Alone in humble surroundings, Saint Peter prays for forgiveness with an intensity fueled by the artist’s use of light and the unrelenting realism. Unlike other artists inspired by Caravaggio in this gallery, La Tour worked in relative isolation in northeastern France, and his connection to his Italian counterpart remains unclear.
