Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers
Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, Shukei Sesson (Japanese, 1504 - 1589) 1500s

The sweeping landscape depicted in this handscroll actually has nothing to do with the artists native land; rather, it pertains to the popular theme which celebrates two rivers in southern China. Although Sesson had firsthand knowledge of model paintings of this legendary subject, his pictures are original creations devised with a vivid imagination and energetic hand.
